Utopia and snippets of Architectural Design Process Written for the first time by Thomas More in 1516, the Word “Utopia” was a gateway to solidify the idea of perfect worlds. It was rooted from the words ou-topos, ‘no place’, and eu-topos, good place, in order to emphasize the unreachable dream of a fair and just place that does not dwell on those days’ ongoing problems. Of course to reach this perfection, a person should not only have a viewpoint on Social and Economical requirements, but also structure of the place itself as well.

A place’s own identity comes from the structure the spaces itself and their arrangements. The streets, the buildings’ height, the city’s scale and grain all do lead up to characterization of a place. While it is questionable, whether or not a synthetic city like this would have an evolving character, since it’s not been shaped through time like real cities, or the fact that imperfections do create solid characterizations which would Utopian cities would be lacking. Furthermore most of the design ideas come from dealing with problems and creating solutions. In a perfect world like Utopia there would be no need for innovative thinking, and all of the people would live in a constant plateau.

It is natural to yearn for a way out of the grid, to get rid of all of the world problems we are facing today. We want to isolate ourselves and there is no place on this planet to create a place, and a society on scratch. That’s why we create places like Utopia, and Atlantis, to dream, to cope, and to hope. We don’t actually want to live in an isolated island, we just want to believe that when we need the most there could be a way out. And this I believe is the real deal with Utopia.
