An utopian in 20th century
AN UTOPIAN IN 20TH CENTURY: LE CORBUSIER
Utopia, is a phenomenon that exists since ancient times for architecture.
All the projects that is not possible to apply due to economic, social and
technical reasons which are pushing the limits of the mind and logic are
accepted as utopia. Main aims of these ideas are to create an ideal city,
provide better living conditions and change the city and life accordingly.
In 20th century, these architectural utopias became popular after 2nd World
War. In this term's utopias, besides the big city plans, there is some
suggestions that try to find solutions for the social life's problems. In the
very beggining of the 20th century, doubtless one of the most famous architect
who criticized the problems of existing cities and adopts an utopian attitude
to solve this issue and develops ideal city suggestions is Le Corbusier.
There are three different suggestions for the city forms to alternative for
the city of 19th century: Contemporary City (Ville Contemporraine) , Radiant City
(Ville Radieuse), Industrial Linear City (La Cite Lineaire Industrielle). He
explained his ideas in his book as detailed. First ideal city suggestion of the
Le Corbusier is Contemporary City for 3.000.000 people. He always defend that the
ideal city form of the age should be based on mechanization and geometry. He
expressed that the decayed old cities are caused to psyical and psycological
illness and these negative things are related with the city directly. Le Corbusier
tried to provide the balance between social regularity and individual freedom
in his ideal city suggestion.
